IT is unfortunate to note that Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL) has hit the headlines again in both print and electronic media. Very recently, a horrifying clash occurred among several factions of BCL at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) that forced the authority to shut it down for a few days. Regrettably, BCL has been failing to uphold its glorious past since 1991 as the student wing of the ruling Awami League and got involved in various undesirable crimes. Yet, it cannot be denied that vested interest groups has been using a part of this student organisation at different times to satisfy their selfish motives. We are at a loss to understand as to why they are treading on the path self-destruction instead of making themselves competent and capable citizens of the country. It is imperative that they realise what they are doing. The sooner they do, the better it is for them and the country. .
Time has come to rethink whether the student wings of the political parties should continue to carry on with political activities. Needless to say, it is an open secret that conflict of interest is pushing them into violent activities resulting in loss of precious lives and valuable properties in the end. However, this kind of activities does not suit a student organisation with a glorious past and hence should not be allowed to continue in the greater interest of the nation. We hope the concerned authorities would not allow these elements who are using politics to hide their evil motives. We expect that the government to take all necessary steps to rein the rogue activists, no matter how politically powerful they are.
